Galle Fort is located in the Galle Gulf on the south-east coast Sri Lanka
. It was built in 1588 by the Portuguese, and then widely fortified by the Dutch in the 17th century, beginning in 1649. Fort, like most of the forts of Sri Lanka, is built on a small peninsula that protrudes into the sea. It is here that the Dutch more than three centuries ago built their famous 90-acre fort, which still retains its old-world charm with its high ramparts and rich towers.
The beautifully preserved Dutch Fort is one of the most iconic images of Sri Lanka's colonial architecture. Stone walls, narrow streets and impressive buildings are a constant reminder of the rich and diverse history of the fort.
Fort of Galle is one of the best-preserved examples of colonial fortifications of the 17th century in the world. The significance of the fort's heritage was recognized by UNESCO, and the site itself is listed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage in combination of historical and architectural significance.
The fort has a rich history, and today includes a multinational and multireligious population. Among the main attractions of the fort are the ramparts and the lighthouse. In addition, the Fort has a Dutch church, a museum and many historic buildings. Fort is really a fortified city, with a rectangular pattern of streets, with low houses with pediments and verandas in the Dutch colonial style. Owners of houses are not allowed to change their architecture, but some updates still occur, and private museums with craft workshops have been established here in recent years.
Walking through the streets of today's Fort is a real holiday. The fort's shafts are quite high, massive and well preserved. The northern side of the fort recently renovated the Galle Cricket Stadium. The evenings here are so beautiful, especially if you are located on old Dutch ramparts to watch the sunsets. In Fort there are also many fine cafes, hotels, shops and restaurants. Galle Fort perfectly survived the tsunami, which damaged some of the coastal areas of Galle.
